On February 10th, 2022, the Barbados Film and Video Association (BFVA) held its general elections to vote and appoint members to serve as the Executive Board for the period of 2022-2023. The BFVA is pleased to announce the appointment of its new 2022 - 2023 Board. The names of the individuals who will be working with the community to build on the work of the previous boards and strengthen the association's future are as followed:
President - Rivelino Simmons; 1st VP - Dominic Franklyn; 2nd VP - Jamal Slocombe; Treasurer - Marvyn White; Secretary - Pia Parris; Membership - Chantal Graham; Public Relations Officer - Reyda Gay; Assistant Secretary-Treasurer - Christian-Kendahl Rock; Floor Members - David Lewis, Neil Hoyte, Caroline “CiCi” Reid.
As the world emerges from the pandemic, the BFVA is excited to continue to create opportunities for creatives to learn, collaborate and go further. At a recently held virtual handover ceremony, the work done by past-president Romario Hunte to keep the Association alive was lauded. Former President Hunte recommends a review of the by-laws since they weren’t originally formalised for corporate governance. The matter of election and practices where elected people appoint others to the board is an example of such a practice that isn’t codified in the laws of the association. The former President made a recommendation to formulate an outreach committee, website and public relations committee and a festival committee. These, he said, should be formulated and included in the by-laws of the board.
Current President, Rivelino Simmons, has indicated he has several initiatives planned for the year and looks forward to sharing them with members. In his first appearance on the Morning Report on CBC, President Simmons’ action plan was outlined as one which seeks to achieve the ultimate goal of encouraging more local content and on television. He stated, “The world is opening up. I thought this would be a good time to get together, start planning, and looking to move our content to the world”.
Using himself as an example, Simmons said that his work is hardly confined to Barbados and that his work is distributed throughout the Caribbean, North America, the UK, and Africa. These are markets he seeks to introduce to others to broaden their scope. He added, “film and video cover all aspects of the creative sector, you have fashion, music… once they’re all included within a project, you are pretty much marketing yourself to the world. You can move these products anywhere and everywhere”.
In keeping with the mandate to assist filmmakers who may have had a hard time during the pandemic, the Association has waived the membership fees for this year.
